Analyze your Letterboxd or IMDb film taste
Your movie ratings can reveal recurring preferences, favorite kinds of stories and surprising contradictions. RateMyCinema reads a Letterboxd or IMDb CSV export and combines viewing statistics with an AI interpretation of your film taste. This guide explains how to prepare your file and read the results.
Export your Letterboxd ratings or reviews
- Sign in to your Letterboxd account and open the Letterboxd data export page.
- Download the export and extract the ZIP archive on your device.
- Choose
ratings.csvorreviews.csvfor analysis. Upload the CSV itself, rather than the ZIP archive.
Keep the original column headings. Letterboxd files are recognized using the Letterboxd URI column. A reviews export adds written context to your ratings; a ratings export focuses on your scores.
Export your IMDb ratings
Sign in to IMDb and open your ratings list. Use its export option to download a CSV file. The export interface can change, so follow IMDb's current instructions if the option has moved.
Use the original IMDb ratings export, preserving its headings and movie identifiers. Renaming or removing columns may prevent the file from being recognized. A custom spreadsheet with movie titles alone is not equivalent to an IMDb export.
Upload your CSV and start the analysis
- Return to RateMyCinema and select your CSV export file.
- Choose an analysis model if you want to change the default. The advanced settings are optional; a custom API key uses your chosen provider's availability and billing rules.
- Start the analysis and follow the progress messages until the report is ready.
You do not need to give this tool your Letterboxd or IMDb password. Use your own export, or a file you have permission to analyze. The file is uploaded for processing; do not assume analysis happens only in your browser. Avoid including information you do not want processed.
What does a film taste radar mean?
The report brings together your imported ratings, available review text and viewing statistics. A taste radar is a way to summarize an interpretation, rather than an objective grade for your taste. Read it alongside the written explanation and compare its claims with your own experience.
AI can misread irony, unusual ratings and limited samples. Results may differ between models or exports. Treat the interpretation as entertainment and a conversation starter, not a psychological assessment or a factual description of your personality.
Why might my file fail?
Check that you selected a CSV export from Letterboxd or IMDb, not the original ZIP or a manually edited file with different headings. A smaller or incomplete export may also provide less material for analysis. Follow any error message shown by the tool rather than repeatedly submitting the same file.
